On February 2nd, Mr. Hariyono Utomo, the chief of Sabo Technical Center, Directorate General of Water Resources, Ministry of Public Works, and Mr. Edy, the head of Bakesbang (Residents protection agency) in Jember District, who have joined the counterpart trainings, attended a presentation and review of Banjir Bandang training at the head office of JICA.

Trainees made the following comments reviewing the trainings since January 24th.

  • Indonesia has certain level of argent management at the time of disaster and renovation after disasters, however in Japan preparedness before disaster is fulfilling.
  • In Indonesia, role allocation among central, provincial and local organizations is unclear and scheme of communication and information sharing are not organized. It is very difficult to figure out how we can make an action with unified system and without overlapping.
  • Especially, daily disaster prevention activities by residents are very important at the time of disasters. We would like to know more about information sharing between governments and residents.
  • In Indonesia, we would like to hold an international workshop regarding methods for reducing volcanic disasters as Japan had in 2003 in Fujiyoshida City, Yamanashi Prefecture. The reason why is because it is a good chance to exchange information not only about governmental actions but also residential actions for preventing disasters.

The trainees seemed to be satisfied with this training because they have difficult time to allocate roles in disaster management and establish a disaster prevention scheme. Also they expressed their great appreciation for special concern of people / organization who accepted the trainings.
