The current situation of the Jeneberang River

At Mt. Bawakaraeng which located in the uppermost reach of the Jeneberang River, South Sulawesi province, in Sulawesi Island, 32 people became casualties of mudflow on March, 26th in 2004 because its caldera walls collapsed and the debris flow traveled as far as villages which located 2.5 kilometers downstream. The later rainfalls generated debris flow repeatedly, buried farmlands, and damaged traffic roads which cross river channels. Also, it was feared that the functions of Bili-Bili Multi-Purpose Dam which locates 35 kilometers downstream from the caldera collapsed point might be undermined due to the flow of debris from the collapse and the accompanying deterioration in water quality.

At the area, Urgent Disaster Reduction Project for Mt. Bawakaraeng has been implemented with JICA's ODA Loan. This project is rehabilitating existing infrastructures (bridges, etc.), and constructing Sabo facilities and a debris flow warning system. The Project is expected to promote protecting human life and public and private property from mudflows. Also, by preventing further sediment flow from the disaster area, the project will improve functions of the dams which locate the downstream. Thus the Project is expected to contribute to keeping social and economic activities in Makassar City, the provincial capital of Southern Sulawesi, and the surrounding area through stable supply of dam water to the city and the surrounding area.

In December, 2010, 7-7 Sabo dam at the most upstream area of the Jeneberang River was completed. Also, at Lengkese village where some people were killed by disaster in 2004, a disaster museum was completed in 2010.

Now, it is the peak of rainy season at the area. Alghough the total amount of rainfall and sediment discharge into the Jeneberang River are less than the last year, still large volume of unstable debris and sediment deposit inside of Mt. Bawakaraeng's caldera. It is concerned about the influences to the downstream.
