The Seminar

On March 7th, The Workshop "Enhancing Media Contribution to Disaster Risk Reduction" was held at Jakarta with collaboration of Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC) and National Agency for Disaster Management. At the beginning of the Workshop, Ms.Neulis, the head of division for Information  in National Agency for Disaster Management, Mr. Kiyoshi Kayashima, Deputy Director, International Office for Disaster Management, Cabinet Office, Government of JAPAN, and Mr.Atsushi Koresawa, Executive Director of ADRC made opening speeches.

At the Workshop, Mr.Hidetomi Oi, Senior Adviser in Global Environment Department, JICA made a presentation titled as "Disaster Education for Mass Media in Developing Countries". He introduced a simple rain gauge with alarm device/ a water-level gauge which its’ producing and installation were conducted in many countries such as Nepal and Sri Lanka as a part of disaster prevention activities in communities. Also, with Mr.Toshiyasu Ueno JICA Expert, they demonstrated the alarm devices (buzzers and lamps) on the simple rain gauge. These devices were also installed in Jember District, a model site of the Project, and used for establishing the early warning and emergency measures for Banjir Bandang.

Besides the above, a panel discussion was held after the following presentations.

• "Sharing Information of Disaster in Japan" (Mr.Takeshi Koizumi, Senior Coordinator for International Earthquake and Tsunami Information in Japan Meteorological Agency)
• "Disaster Approach of Mass Media in Japan" (Mr.Takeshi Tonoike, Associate Director of Disaster and Safety Information Center, News Department, NHK)
• "Disaster Approach of Mass Media in Indonesia" (Mr.Ahmad Arif, Writer of the Kompas)
• "Current Disaster Event" (Dr. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, National Disaster Management Agency)
• "Lesson learned Toward Suitable System" (Prof. Bambang Rudyanto, Department of Business and Media, Faculty of Economics and Business Management, Wako University)
