There was a sediment related disaster in March 3th at Pakis area, so that one house was carried away by flood and much of drift woods were remained in resident area. Then JICA investigated the disaster with the staff of Board of Nation Unity, Politic and Public Protection in Jember district in March 10th.

According to hearing of the residents, it was a little rain in resident area, but it would have been heavy rain around upstream area in mountain. Some of residents who had been coming back from agricultural working in upstream area recognized rapid increase of water level in the river. Moreover they watched the turbid color water and felt strange smell from the river at the same time, so that they judged it was unusual situation. After returning to the resident area, they made warning for residents. Then only a few people were injured in this disaster.

The heavy equipment supplied by Jember district was worked immediately to remove the sediments of debris and drift woods after the disaster. But when we went to investigate the disaster area, the residents had been working to put away drift woods.

Mr. Yoshida Expert went to upstream area in Mach 11th to investigate riverbed and slope condition. The investigation was executed only middle of upstream area, because the road to upstream area was lost by flood.

In the investigation area, the sections of sediment or erosion appeared alternately along the channel. Moreover the channel was sifted at some of points. According to hearing of the residents, such similar situation was occurred about 10 years ago.
