"National Seminar on Sediment Flow Handling and Dies Natalis 10th of Master Program in Management of Natural Disasters, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada" was held.

10th anniversary seminar of the foundation of Master Program in Management of Natural Disasters(MPBA), founded in Faculty of Engineering, Gadjah Mada University, was held from September 12th to 13th, in Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, as a part of the Integrated Sediment-related Disaster Management (ISDM) Project (2001-2006) and was co-hosted by Gadjah Mada University, Ministry of Public Works and JICA.

On September 12th, lectures about Integrated Disaster Mitigation Management Project for "Banjir Bandang" and an opening ceremony were held. Mr. Toshiyasu UENO expert introduced project activities in the lectures about Integrated Disaster Mitigation Management Project for "Banjir Bandang". In addition, there were lectures regarding a method for prediction of disasters triggered by deep-catastrophic landslide by Dr. Taro UCHIDA, Senior Researcher in the Sabo Division, National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management (NILIM), MLIT, who visited Indonesia as short-term expert, and Sediment-related Disaster Warning and Evacuation System by Dr. Atsuhiko KINOSHITA, Manager of Quality Assurance and Investigation, Rokko Sabo Office, Kinki Regional Development Bureau, MLIT. During the follow-up opening ceremony, Mr. Djoko Kirmanto, Minister for Public Works made a keynote speech and Prof. Sudjawardi, Dean of Gadjah Mada University, Mr. Motofumi KOHARA, Chief Representative of JICA Indonesia office, and Mr. Yoshifumi HARA, Permanent Councilor and Director of International SABO Institute of Japan SABO Association, gave words of greeting. Hara Director described in his speech that Sabo technology should be enhanced furthermore by sharing disaster experiences between Japan and Indonesia. Then, Dr. Mochammad Amron, Director General of Water Resources, Ministry of Public Works, introduced the creation and publication of the Sabo Technical Handbook by reference to various manuals as results of ISDM Project.

The next day, on 13th, a plenary session was held first under the direction of Prof. Dr. Budi WignyoSukarto. There were lectures regarding Water Resources Management Policy and Water Induce by Dr. Mochammad Amron, Director General of Water Resources, Ministry of Public Works, Sediment Flow Management and Water Resources Conservation by Mr. Pitoyo Subandrio, Director of River and Coastal, Ministry of Public Works, and MPBA roles and activity on Natural Disaster in Indonesia by Dr. Darmanto in MPBA course. Then, under the direction of Mr. Hariyono Utomo, Head of Sabo Technical Center, there were lectures regarding Components of Disaster Coping Capacity by Mr. Masayuki WATANABE, an Invited Researcher from Institute of Industrial Science, Tokyo University, Mechanism of Landslide/Collapse by Dr. Hiroyuki NAKAMURA, Honorary Professor of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, and Philosophy and Process of ISDM Project by Mr. Fumito WATANABE, Director of Planning and Investigation, Sabo Frontier Foundation, who was previous chief adviser of ISDM Project. And then, parallel sessions were held and 26 tasks in total were presented. Mr. UENO expert of Integrated Disaster Mitigation Management Project for "Banjir Bandang" made presentation of method for identification of Banjir Bandang hazardous area.

200 people including graduates of MPBA course, related persons of Ministry of Public Works in various regions in Indonesia and over 10 sabo engineers from Japan participated in the seminar. A poster to introduce activities of Integrated Disaster Mitigation Management Project for "Banjir Bandang" was displayed at the booth in the hall.
