Workshop on Volcanic Eruption Disaster Mitigation was held.

On 15th September, the ‘Workshop on Volcanic Eruption Disaster Mitigation' was held in the conference room of the Ministry of Public Works. This workshop aimed to create an effective planning of the projects or implementation of measures in the future by sharing information as well as results of investigation on prevention of disasters caused by volcanoes.

At the beginning of the workshop, Dr. Mochammad Amron, Director General of Water Resources, gave an opening speech, said that it is necessary to implement measures contin uously and steadily based on a comprehensive and sustainable planning. In the workshop, presentations was made on the themes as given below:

From Indonesian side; "Volcanic Eruption Disaster by Mt. Merapi in 2010" by Mr. Hariyono Utomo, Head of Sabo Technical Center, "Countermeasures against Debris Flow Disaster occurred as eruption of Mr. Merapi" by Mr. Bambang Hargono, Director of Surayu-Opak River Basin Office, "Hydraulic Model Experiment of Jumoyo Diversion Channel" by Dr. Untung, Head of Sabo Experimental Station. From Japanese side; "Trial Simulation of Debris Flow in Mt. Merapi" by Mr. Hiroshi KISA, Collaborating Researcher of Volcano and Debris Flow Research Team, Public Works Research Institute, "Issues to be Considered for Review Master Plan" by Mr. Kazuhiko OTANI, Director of Yachiyo Engineering Co., Ltd., "Engineering Concept on Sabo Plan against Lahars around Mt.Merapi" by Dr.Nobuo ANYOJI, Director of Comprehensive Disaster Management, Sabo Technical Center, "Cocept on the Facilities Planning for Debris Flow in Mt. Merapi" by Mr. Fumito WATANABE, Director of Planning and Investigation, Sabo Frontier Foundation.

In the dialogue session, opinions were exchanged on an ideal way to promote the future sabo facilities planning in Mt. Merapi. At the end of the work shop, Mr. Pitoyo Subandrio, Director of River and Coastal, expressed gratitude for Japan-Indonesia Sabo Technical Cooperation as well as the necessity of continuous implementation of the countermeasure in the future.
