Field investigation of sediment disaster

PhotoThe area where debris flow flooded

We conducted field investigation of sediment disaster at Tieng Village in Kejajar Sub-District, Wonosobo District, Central Java Province. There, due to debris flow cased by heavy rain on 18th December, 9 were killed, 2 were missing, and about 70 houses were washed out or destroyed.

Hillside collapse has occurred at 1.5 Km upper stream from flood area of debris flow. We suppose that the sediment formed a natural dam at the river channel. Then it collapsed and flowed down as debris flow. The river channel which was on flood area of debris flow was a steep slope such as over 1/10. Therefore we assume that debris flow flowed/flooded eroding the river bed and river banks in every direction.

To prevent reoccurrence of disasters, hardware and software system building are needed, for example planned facilities such as sabo dam and river channel works or establishment of early warning and evacuation.
