On February 2, 6 persons including Mr. Pitoyo, Director of River and Coastal, Ministry of Public Works in this counterpart training participated in a policy dialogue of SABO between Japan and Indonesia at Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. This dialogue was carried out to exchange opinions between Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism at Japan and Ministry of Public Works at the Republic of Indonesia regarding promoting to solve administrative problems of SABO which both countries have.

At the beginning of this policy dialogue, Mr. Shinji Yamaguchi, Head of the Earthquake and Volcanic Disaster Management Office, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and Mr. Pitoyo, Director of River and Coastal, Ministry of Public Works gave addresses for the opening. After Mr. Toshiyasu Ueno expert explained the present situation and the future problems of Banjir Bandang Disaster Mitigation Management Project, both Japan and Indonesia explained the administration of SABO and its problems. Then, they held a discussion on the ideal method of exchanging technical skills in the future on the basis of the present situation and problems of sediment-related disaster mitigation management at both countries.

In the discussion, their opinions were in perfect harmony on the following points.

  • Both countries improved their abilities to manage sediment-related disaster by long-years technical cooperation. However, they need to continue to exchange cooperation between them in the future to face new problems.
  • Especially a huge scale sediment-related disaster which is accompanied by a volcanic eruption or heavy rain is an important theme to exchange.
  • If both countries agree that they need to continue to exchange cooperation in the future, they will sign the memorandum.
