Mount Merapi Field Study

On 26th February and 1st March, persons involved in SABO of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism conducted study on amount of sediment of pyroclastic flow, debris flow and riverbed fluctuation situation of the River Gendor and the River Putih that flowing on Mount Merapi. At the field study, accompanied by persons in change of Yachiyo Engineering Co., Ltd., Noriyuki Minami, Director General of SABO Department and Shusaku Shiba, Deputy Director of SABO Planning Division of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and Toshiyasu Ueno, JICA Expert joined on 26th February and Koichi Kondo, President of SABO Technical Center, Tadanori Ishizuka, Leader of Volcano and Debris Flow research team of Public Works Research Institute, Yoishi Washio, head of Investigation and Quality Control of Shikoku mountainous SABO office, Shikoku Regional Development Bureau and Agus of SABO Experimental Station joined on 1st March.

At the site, we could observe that the south-side of crater wall of Mount Merapi was breaking and concerned the effect to the urban area of Jogjakarta. It is currently in rainy season and every time it rains, debris flow repeats falling and flooding. The riverbed fluctuation is also high.

However, replacement of the bridge at drainage canal planned point around the intersection of national roads of River Putih has been completed and placed in service.
