Related persons of the engineering office of Mt. Kelud volcano, JICA experts, etc. operated Sabo investigations at volcanic terrains of Mt. Kelud volcano, East Java Province on April 27-28, 2009. The Kelud volcano has erupted frequently, which caused extensive damage at downstream basins. Recently, it erupted in 1990.

The crater lake was blocked by lava dome newly formed after 2007 at the crater. We inspected sediment control facilities at Badak river, Putih river, Jari river, Rekso river, etc. at the southern foot of the mountain, and confirmed certain effect of the countermeasures for formed sediment from Mt. Kelud volcano.

At Serinjing river at the northern foot of Mt. Kelud volcano, "Banjir Bandang" was occurred by heavy rain on February 23, 2009. It shows that at the slopes or mountain streams where a large amount of volcanic products as unstable sediment is deposited, it is necessary to provide not only against volcanic actions but also against denudation of slopes /sediment discharge by rainfall.
