The field investigation of sediment disasters caused by West Java Earthquake was conducted.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 happened in Indian Ocean, off West Java Province at 2:55 p.m., on September 2, 2009 (Western Indonesia Time). This earthquake caused extensive damages to Cikangkareng village, Cianjur district, West Java Province, such as occurrence of the massive slope failures, which made around 60 victims, collapse of many buildings.

On September 8, 2009, six members including Director of Sabo Technical Centre, Ministry of Public Works, and the specialists of JICA carried out the field investigation to grasp the situation of occurrence of sediment disasters by the earthquake. The Cikangkareng village where the field investigation was conducted is around 130 km south-southeast of Jakarta.

As a result, the massive slope failure was occurred at only one place. There were falling rocks and falling of road shoulder partially on the roads to the disaster-stricken areas, but there were no obstacles to the passage of vehicles. In addition, the houses collapsed by seismic movement itself weren't observed on the route toward the disaster-stricken areas or around the area where the massive slope failure was occurred.

The Directorate of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, Indonesia, urges the residents around the area where the massive slope failure was occurred to remain vigilant about the danger of occurrence of new landslide, especially in rainy season.
