Short-term experts conducted Sabo investigations at Mt. Merapi Volcano are

On November 11th, Short-term experts who were visiting Indonesia conducted investigations for mudflow prevention at Mt. Merapi Volcano area which locates at about 30 Km north of Jogjakarta city.

At the area, Urgent Disaster Reduction Project for Mt. Merapi/Progo River Basin project, JICA’s ODA Loan Project, is on going. Sustainable Development through Disaster Prevention is set as a slogan. The conducted projects are consisted of the following 4 components: 1) hardware and software system building for sediment disaster prevention, 2) management of gravel mining, 3) multipurpose use of sabo facilities, regional development by irrigation dam reparation, 4) river bed stabilization in the lower Progo River Basin.

On June 14th, 2006, at the location where pyroclastic flow occurred and two people were killed for the disaster, volcaniclastic material were piled up and trees died form heat wave of the pyroclastic flow remained. Sabo facilities which prevent disaster occurrence by debris flow from unstable sediment into the lower river were built by the Opak River and Gendol River. At the side of the river channel, people were working hardly on gravel mining.
