On February 12th, we conducted filed investigation of the Jompo River in Jember District. The Jompo River is a model site of the Project. We conduct extraction of dangerous area for Banjir Bandang and make a Banjir Bandang hazard map. Also, we are planning to install rain gauges and start monitoring of it.

Because of rainy season, the flow volume of the Jompo River was large, temporary bridges made of bamboo where people could pass while dry season were flowed out. Also, at a disaster site where a landslide occurred in 2006, we could find expansion of the disaster range. On the other hand, at slopes where cracks were made by landslide activities, they were covered with plastic sheets to prevent the surface water from seeping in, and simple extensometers were installed.

According to local plantation office, the level of the Jompo River suddenly rose a week ago and there was a panic that neighbor residents rushed to evacuate. Since rainy season still continues, a special caution will need.
