The Jeneberang River in February

Photo7-1 the erosion control dam (rails are build on levee crowns for spill way)

On February 24th, we conducted a field investigation in the Jeneberang River basin in South Sulawesi Province. Although in Sinjai District, the east side of Mt. Bawakaraeng, from June to July it is the peak of rainy season, in the west side of the Jeneberang River these days it is the peak. In this January, the amount of rainfall for a month reached 1,600 mm. Because of this rainfall, roads for materials handling were flowed out by landslides of bank slopes.

At the erosion control dam established in the Jeneberang River, levee crowns for spill way are severely abraded away. For this, they try to install rails at the levee crowns for spill way and prevent further ablation.

Also, at Lengkese village where 32 people were killed by mudflows of collapsed caldera walls of Mt. Bawakaraeng in 2004, now a disaster museum is on construction.
