Excursion to Mt.Merapi

Photothe diorama of Mt.Merapi

On March 8th, an excursion to Mt.Merapi was organized by “International Workshop on Multimodal Sediment Disasters Triggered by Heavy Rainfall and Earthquake and the Countermeasures” which was held in Yogyakarta. About 30 people joined to the excursion.

At first they visited Mt.Merapi Museum. This museum was opened in early 2010 by Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. This museum is expected to become an educational centre for people’s better understanding of world volcanoes including Mt.Merapi. The volcano activity of Mt.Merapi and the disaster-prevention countermeasures are displayed in the museum.

After that, they visited the Boyong River where rain gauges were installed as a part of debris flow warning system, and a disaster site of pyroclastic flow in 2006.
