PSBM: Seminar for Teacher to Enhance Competency

Lesson Study (LS) seminar was held in Serang City, Serang District and Pandeglang District for 3 days, from 19 to 21 July 2011. Participants are supervisors, principals, and teachers in 3 district and city. Prof. Izumi Nishitani, one of JICA experts explained about the general information about LS and Japanese education condition so that participants will improve their competence.

Prof. Nishitani mentioned that it was not easy to become a teacher in Japan. They had to pass several stages and competency tests to receive a certification. After that, they can finally teach in school. "In Japan, seminars or discussions were conducted every 5 years. It was so important to improve quality of teachers," Prof. Nishitani said. He also mentioned that teacher had to have abilities to conduct self-evaluation because student can learn comfortably in lessons if teachers have enough competence.

"We cannot look our spine and hair by ourselves. So we need other's comment or materials to know how our spine and hair look like. It is same as LS. Model teacher will know how the class is through open class and reflection. We have to accept input and suggestion from others about benefit and weakness of learning process", Prof. Nishitani said showing his spine and head.
