Lesson Study Conference with Mr. Masaaki Sato in 3 Resource Universities

As the first activity in the 4th year of PELITA, PELITA team collaborated with three universities, State University of Yogyakarta (UNY), State University of Malang (UM), and Education University of Indonesia (UPI) to conduct a video conference with Mr. Masaaki Sato.

The conference began with a presentation from Mr. Atsushi Tsukui, one of experts of PELITA-JICA. He explained about how external resource person intervene to school reform. He also emphasized that LS was not only implemented as a special activity. LS is an attempt for principal or supervisor to transform school culture through the modification of ecology and rules of school towards improving the quality of learning.

The next presentation was delivered by Mr. Masaaki Sato. He showed the differences of the lesson design in three countries, namely Indonesia, Japan, and USA. He pointed out that, in USA, designing lessons are oriented to develop curriculum instead of making sure of all students' better understanding. Teachers spend more time for instruction than for students' discussions. On the other hand Japan focuses on building teachers' collegiality by collaborative creation of lesson plan, and students have much time for discussion. While in Indonesia, the lesson design looks more similar to the American pattern. However the weakness in American pattern is that teachers tend not to consider carefully making a design that can be surely understood by the students, and preparing alternative ways when students have difficulty to understand.

The presentation ended with some scene of lessons in Japan. From the video, participants learnt how to make both of slow learners and students in a standard level of understanding learn at the same time. "Lesson Study does not mean the use of group work. Group work is an instrument to help slow learners to learn better. Slow learners can learn well when they can ask for help from the other learners. It should be operated so that students establish good communication to acquire competence", said Mr. Masaaki Sato.
