Prof. Manabu Sato, Ph.D in Lesson Study International Conference, Jakarta

Lesson Study International Conference was held on September 3rd 2012 in Sultan Hotel, Jakarta. In the conference Kepala BPSDMPK & PMP, MONE, Dr. Muhammad Hatta, opened the conference. There are 250 participants coming from university; Dean/Head of Faculty of UPI, UNY, UM, UNP, UNLAM and UNIMA, Education Dinas and principal/teacher from; Kota Serang, Kab. Serang, Kab. Pandeglang, Bandung, Sumedang, Yogyakarta, Malang, Pasuruan, Banjarbaru and North Minahasa.

Dr. Muhammad Hatta gave the opening remarks and said that our issue about national basic education was not lies on educational inputs rather than the process of education. In the education process people have feelings and way of thinking. Education does not stand only on the result, but also on the process itself. In order to manage education process, it requires professional teacher. The central government strives to ensure those teachers are becoming professional educator. To teach students, learning basic skill itself is not enough. Teacher should holds or master on how the learning process is delivered inside the lesson.

Learning process should strive for democratization. Through Lesson Study, democratization is achieved through collaboration, sharing between teachers or students. Collegiality among teachers (teacher-student) is not a mind frame, but it is application inside Lesson Study. Thereby, the government will strive to ensure the implementation of Lesson Study in the future.

Prof. Manabu Sato, Ph.D (Emeritus Professor from Tokyo University and Professor in Gakushin University) in his presentation said that learning reformation is necessary in education system, education community, and school development. Learning Community should be established from dialogue communication accomplished through listening to each other in order to create mutual learning. Learning is a dialogue between object, dialogue between another, and dialogue between his/herself.

Community in 21st century has changed totally compared to the condition of previous century. In the 20th century, school is developed due to the industrial need. Nevertheless, nowadays many countries have developed from post-industrialization into globalization. The world we live in is becoming one. Although Asian countries have not changed into single community due to its various cultures, in time, this condition will be achieved.

Many countries have changed. School is also changed. In the 21st century, community life is based on science, where they are not only know/understand science but also able to apply it. Education should improve equality and quality, quality education for all. Teacher should make efforts to motivate their student in the lesson. In order to do so, school should create good learning atmosphere to ensure mutual learning. Teacher should conduct Open Class at least 3 times a year. Through Open Class, teacher could study their learning process, gain feedback from reflection activity, and try to find the solution to make effective lesson.

Prof. Manabu Sato shared interesting facts on how he spread the idea of Learning Community through Lesson Study. He said that he had visited more than 1.000 schools in the first 15 years, but he could not achieve any significant result. Nevertheless, he tried to learn why his reform was not successful. Based on huge amount of "failures", he reached to the idea for reforming school; that is the principle of the above-mentioned Lesson study as Learning community. His concept of Lesson Study is developed not only in his country but other country as well.
