Sharing in LSBS Forum

LSBS Forum was held on 10-12 September 2012, in Millenium Hotel, Jakarta. It was participated by 120 participants from Education Office, University, principal and teacher of LSBS and member of Lesson Study Club (LSc) from Sumedang, Bantul, Pasuruan, Padang, Banjarbaru and Minahasa Utara. Team Leader of PELITA-JICA, Mr. Koji Sato explained that this forum was established for sharing knowledge and experience about Lesson Study in their respective area in order to come up with the efficient strategy for the continuation of Lesson Study in Indonesia. This forum also has invited two main resource persons, namely Mr. Masatsugu Murase and Mr. Masaaki Sato. Additionally, it discusses 4 crucial topics presented by four different experts: 1. Mr. Ryo Suzuki who discussed about the development of learning media; 2. Mr. Atsushi Tsukui who explained about video shooting and editing; 3. Mr. Massaki Sato who discussed about the role of principal in LSBS; and 4. Mrs. Naomi Takasawa who discussed about local government strategy to develop LSBS.

Mr. Masatsugu Murase explained that the major challenge of Lesson Study in Indonesia is in designing the lesson. He offered new insight namely Authentic Learning as the very basic to develop student's activity. Both Authentic Assessment and Situated Learning are oriented on the development of meaningful and contextual student's activity. He stated that the meaning of contextual learning is not always related on the daily life, but it is more on the nature of context of the lesson. He expected that teacher could think the relation between context, content, and form of assignment that included inside student's way of thinking and cooperation.

Mr. Masaaki Sato explained about his dream to develop collaborative learning pattern where the students could learn from other comfortably. He also shared about Indonesian student condition that's not appropriately facilitated based on the PISA OECD data, due to one way pattern lesson. He invited the participant to change their way of thinking into dialogical learning where student could cooperate inside Collaborative Learning and Reciprocal Learning. The nature of this dialogue is that student could listen to each other. From this insight, he explained the meaning of Professional Learning Community especially inside sharing experience activity (case method) and also asked teachers to always listen with your ear, observe with your eye and feel with your heart towards student condition in order to improve teacher's pedagogical ability.

Mr. Koji Sato explained about the characteristic of LSc which based on the teacher's voluntary to learn through Lesson Study. One of aspects is to put aside the formality and bureaucracy as well as focusing on student's way of learning. Nevertheless, LSc activity should not discriminate the role of MGMP and LSBS, but it synchronize the formal and informal learning process through Lesson Study.

On the second day, participants discussed several learning videos. The discussion was guided by lecturers from three partner university namely UPI, UNY and UM. The aim of the activity is to learn how the participants could share their findings about the video. On the third day, the member of LSc shared their experience through video analysis of Mr. Ryo Suzuki class in Imogiri, Bantul.

Representatives from the university explained about the Association of Lesson Study in Indonesia (ALSI). ALSI was established based on the concern of the program continuation and mis-implementation of Lesson Study. It is expected that it become an engine of lesson study dissemination and quality assurance in Indonesia as well as a media to facilitate teacher, lecturer and policy maker who is concern about this activity.

In the closing remarks, Mr. Koji Sato expressed his gratitude regarding of participant's role in the event and expected that they can learn from other. He also pointed the importance of making relation with the policy maker in order to secure the continuation of Lesson Study and to reach better education dream in the future.
