School Visit to SMPN 10 Banjarbaru

The school visit was conducted on 7 December 2012. The subject of the lesson was English brought by Muhammad Riadi, one of the junior teacher and member of Lesson Study Club in SMPN 10. The topic of the lesson was How To Make Invitation Card. It was not the first open lesson for Mr. Riadi to open his class where JICA Expert Team observed the class. One month earlier he has opened his class and Mr Tanaka attended his open class as an observer. At that time the lesson was very good and alive. Mr. Tanaka was impressed with his way of teaching.

From the beginning until the end of the lesson the students enjoyed the lesson given by the model teacher. It is because the model teacher's approaches towards the students were very friendly and warm. Also, it is understandable because the lesson not only makes the students to apply invitation sentence but they are also have to make their own invitation card. Therefore, creativity process are also active inside the lesson.

Nevertheless, during the reflection, there are so many comments towards the teaching learning process. One of them is about the student activity, whether they understand the concept or not? From the discussion, observers were realized that the students were not actually learning something. They just enjoyed coloring and creating their own birthday invitation card. Additionally, they just copy most part of the sentence from the invitation sample given by the teacher. In this lesson, student didn't apply and connect the previous lesson.

Mr. Tsukui then emphasis the discussion results in his presentation. He commented the student's attitude inside the lesson. Mr. Tsukui assumed that the lesson should not only enjoyable but also filled with respects, especially respect between teacher and student. He said that "Look at the teacher's response to the students with difficulties in learning, if the teacher left them as they were in difficulties then it means that teacher had not enough respect to the students". Mr Tanaka re-designed the lesson structure along with their reflection and shared it with participants.
