Project News

2017-09-01

JICA has been implemented "The Project for Economic Empowerment and Social Participation of PWDs" since January 2017 with its three years duration.

According to the census done in 2015 by the government, about 11 % of population whose age are 5 years and over have disability thus support for persons with disabilities is one of challenges for the government. Jordan has been taking roll as a leader of convention on the rights of person with disability by enforcing a disability low as first country in Arab region in 1988. However, open employment for persons with disabilities is still limited and less that 10 % of companies which have more than 50 employers have achieved 4% Quota of employment of persons with disabilities even though it is required in regulation. There are a various challenges such like accessibility of public infrastructure and facilities of work places, lack of knowledge of companies, insufficient educational opportunity and needs for development of capacity and specific knowledge about employment of persons with disabilities of Ministry of Labour.

So far, there are 19 Job Coaches trained through activities of JICA expert dispatched in past in Jordan. Job Coaches are expected to support both employers and employees with disabilities aiming to achieve open employment for persons with disabilities through assisting proper job matching and adaption to working places. The project is going to train trainers of Job Coach and establish Job Coach network which enable Job Coaches cooperate to provide effective support while provides awareness raising for companies to promote understanding of employment of persons with disabilities.

In Jordan, there are also Syrian refugees with disabilities, most of the having disabilities caused by current conflict in Syria. The project empowers these Syrian refugees with disabilities by conducting group activities and peer counseling.

The government has announced that 23,000 work permissions will be issued for Syrian refugees in Jordan in 2017.Thus the project is going to support both Jordanians and Syrians with disabilities to have more opportunity for open employment.

We are grateful for your understanding and interest to the project.
