mSOS Ebola handover ceremony was held at the Ministry of Health in December 9, 2014

mSOS Ebola handover ceremony was held at the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, December 9, 2014. The Japanese Ambassador Terada, World Health Organization (WHO) Kenya representative Ms. Mandihate, JICA Kenya representative Mr. Eguchi, Ministry of Health officials and local media houses were in attendance.

mSOS Ebola was developed to respond to the ongoing outbreak in West Africa through modification of mSOS (mobile SMS-based outbreak alert system) that was piloted by the project. The system uses mobile SMS that sends information on suspected Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) patient's information instantly by the Ebola Rapid Response Team (RRT) members through a toll-free number. The laboratory diagnosis results are also sent through the system by laboratory technicians at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). mSOS Ebola has been in use nationally since December 2014.

The ceremony included handover of 20,000 copies of viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) guideline, which will be distributed to all health workers receiving the Ebola training as part of JICA's support for Ebola preparedness.

After the ceremony, the Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mr. James Macharia expressed his appreciation on the system that would be used for the fight against Ebola in Kenya.
