Second TOT in the third year

2012-11-12~16

Second TOT (Training of Trainers) for principals and ATs was conducted from 12th to 16th of November. This TOT was not planned originally. After TOT in September, based on their reflections trainers strongly requested to conduct TOT again and implemented. Trainers formed three groups which were the Province of Kammouane, Savannakhet and Champasak. The first day was a preparation day for TOT at provincial level. From the second day, each district conducted one-day TOT together with district feedback. Finally, provincial feedback was held on the last day. The groups of Kammouane and Champasak held a feedback meeting also at the middle of the week and reflected to the following TOTs.

1. The program of TOT

  1. Introduction of "How ITSME makes lesson plans"
  2. Introduction of a science lesson plan.
  3. Introduction of a mathematics lesson plan
  4. Use of planning / reporting forms
  5. Assessment by questionnaire

In this TOT a new presentation on the points and the procedure of making ITSME lesson plans is added to the introductions of exemplar lesson plans. Before we make a lesson plan it is important to study "what children already learned" as well as "what children acquire through the lesson." After that we set up lesson objectives as "what children should be able to do after the lesson." To achieve the objectives we construct a flow of activities carefully. Of course it was emphasized that the lesson objectives, the previous knowledge of children and the flow of the activities should be related closely.

Then, at the science and mathematics sessions trainers also explained the contents of exemplar lesson plans with focusing on the important points of lesson planning. The lesson plans on "Cause of sights" for science and "Direct proportion" for mathematics were introduced. At science session, materials for experiments and how to make them were explained. After that participants did experiments. Through doing experiments participants could analyze the flow of the lesson from the children’s point of view. So it helped the participants understanding it deeply.

At mathematics session, participants discussed what direct proportion is mainly. They exchanged opinions how to explain to the children the concept of direct proportion.

2.District and provincial feedback

The improvement of the way of explanation of the exemplar lesson plans was suggested by trainers who observed the sessions at the district feedback meeting held right after the TOT. They reflected it to the following TOT. At the provincial feedback trainers analyzed the questionnaire result answered by the participants. They found out this TOT was well-received by the participants and the trainers gained confidence. Trainers discussed the points of improvement for better presentation at the next time.
