Project Activities

The Lao government is promoting IT as an engine for the development of the country and the demand of IT service industry (software development, consulting and other computer related services) is increasing in various social scenes every day.
This five-year project was launched in December 2008 with a purpose to establish a mechanism for developing human resource in NUOL according to the IT service market. The project has three components:

Advanced IT training Course

The course includes the world recognized IT trainings designed by the well-known IT companies such as Cisco and Oracle. The trainees will be ready-made IT engineers who will acquire world class IT skills. This series of intensive trainings will be carried out in Graduate Diploma course of the university.
There are three focal points as followings.

  • The project helps university to establish Graduate Diploma course in which the IT training course is carried out. The graduate diploma course is planned to start in September 2010.
  • To enhance the practical skill of software engineering and teaching capabilities, the project organizes series of training sessions for teaching staff of the university. Engineers of private and public sectors are also invited for the training and, in return, they will have an opportunity to teach in the Graduate Diploma course.
  • Demand in IT service market will be reflected into the curriculum. The project is going to organize a curriculum board which consists of representatives from private, public and academic sectors.

On-campus Company

On-campus Company or IT Business Unit is the core of business-academia collaboration. Engineers from IT companies, and professors and students of university will work together for developing IT system in real world. Through this program, Lao IT engineers will gain the experience on team-work and large scale IT system development, and get the real business and real experience in IT business.
IT Business Unit organizes following activities for income generation.

  • Short-term training courses for engineers on private and public sectors
  • Software development ordered from inside and outside the University
  • Network development and maintenance
  • IT support for events
    The lecturers and students of Advanced IT training course are deployed to carry out above activities and the income is used for sustainable management of the company as well as the training course.
    To organize study sessions are also one of the important tasks.

Study Sessions

Study sessions are the common stage where private, public and academic sectors exchange information, present problems and discuss the appropriate measures. The possible topics would be ‘IT market trend’, ‘IT related laws’ and ’IT development strategy’ and etc. The project organizes meetings and workshops, invites guest speakers and arranges study tours on hot topics.
Through the activities, all the key persons of Lao IT field will have a common understanding of necessary measures for creating the appropriate environment for fostering IT service industry.
