Conducted a Pilot Activity and Seminar on Assessments and Developmental Supports in Bayangol District

JICA Project Team conducted a pilot activity and seminar on assessments and developmental supports for children with disabilities (hereinafter "CWDs") from March 28 to 30, 2016 in Bayangol district which is the pilot district of the project. There were about 30 participants including members of the Central Commission of Health, Education and Social Protection for CWDs (hereinafter "the central commission"), its local commission, and personnel of medical care and education. There were two purposes of this activity: (1) the central commission members understand how to set up a system of assessments and developmental supports for CWDs, and (2) the local commission and relevant organizations gain some basic knowledge and experiences for their activities.

Two project experts, Professor Hayashi and Professor Hashimoto conducted developmental assessments for nine CWDs and gave some advice to the parents. The participants observed how the assessments were made through video monitor, and attended lectures on the importance of early detection and intervention, child development, and assessment tools.

After the assessments and lectures, participants said, "Observation of the assessments was very helpful to me" and "I think parents with CWDs need a place where they receive consultation about their child." Others asked some questions including "What is the qualification for assessors in Japan?" and "How do you conduct assessments for children with multiple disabilities?"

Through these activities, JICA Project Team continues to discuss with Mongolian counterparts about how to establish a system of assessments and developmental supports for CWDs and roles of each organization in Mongolia.
