Mr. Chuka, the director of Songino Independent Living Center talks about physical barrier for wheelchair users in Ulaanbaatar city.

On the 1st June 2016, the Project focusing on social participation of persons with disabilities in Ulaanbaatar city (DPUB Project) has started. The Mongolian government has been trying to reduce social discrimination to persons with disabilities in Mongolia but we hardly meet wheelchair users, persons with visual disabilities, persons with hearing disabilities and intellectual disabilities etc. in Ulaanbaatar city. Our project will initially focus on Ulaanbaatar city to help establishing foundation/structure of persons with disabilities to be further included in the various activities in the capital.

On the 20th July 2016, our counterpart organization; the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection and JICA jointly conducted the Project kickoff meeting. There are four main pillars of the Project. 1) Information of persons with disabilities in Ulaanbaatar city is organized 2) Capacity building of organizations of/for persons with disabilities 3) Improvement of physical/information accessibility and perspectives on disability and 4) Capacity building of staff in the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection. More than 60 participants including organizations of/for persons with disabilities, government officials from Ulaanbaatar city, Ministry of Road and Transport Development, Communications and Information Technology Authority etc, have joined. We all confirmed the importance of collaborative cross-cutting approach to realize the inclusive and barrier free society for all.

Through this website, we hope to show that Mongolian persons with disabilities are empowered and gradually participated in the activities in the Ulaanbaatar city.
