The 1st Environmental Accessibility Seminar was conducted

Just after the Information Accessibility Seminar conducted on the 13th October, the 1st Accessibility Seminar focusing on environment such as public building or transportation facility was conducted on the 14th October. In this Seminar, many wheelchair users from NGOs, Ministry of Construction and Urban Development, Ministry of Road and Construction, Ulaanbaatar city etc from government and a public bus company have joined. In total, 60 participants joined and discussed with officers from Ministry of Labor and Social Protection and JICA experts on current Mongolian policies/practices, issues to be solved and possible solutions on environmental accessibilities for persons with disabilities.

During the meeting, the representatives from the Ministry of Construction and Urban Development, Ministry of Road and Construction, Ulaanbaatar city talked about the existing laws, standard and guidelines for buildings and transportations in Mongolia. Then, Ms. Chuluundolgor from the Mongolian National Association of Wheelchair Users and Mr. Avirmed from the Universal Progress IL Center shared about their successful experience of accessibility audits and introduction of barrier free buses. Also, they mentioned about existing problems such as steps and steep slopes on roads for wheelchair users and not completed tile blokes on pavements for persons with visual impairments etc. Based on the discussion through the meeting, the participants agreed to conduct the collaborative baseline survey with DPOs, government officers, public agencies and university researchers. The survey will cover public transportation, pavements and transport facilities (bus etc) in Ulaanbaatar city. Soon, it will be impossible to conduct an outside survey due to coldness in Mongolia. Therefore, the dates and detailed method will be confirmed as soon as possible in collaboration with Association of Wheelchair Users and Universal Progress IL Center. Look forward to it!
