DET Facilitators Trained in Mongolia

On top of the promotion of physical and information accessibility, our project is also trying to promote a social model of disability in Mongolia for reducing discrimination toward persons with disabilities (PWDs). Disability Equality Training (DET) is the main activity for this purpose. DET will be conducted by PWDs and they are called as a facilitator. A facilitator is not a lecturer or teacher. They are facilitating discussion among participants by utilizing picture, video, etc. DET has been implemented in many countries and many organizations/companies such as famous airline companies and supermarkets.

In 7 December 2016, the Training of DET Facilitator (TOF) was implemented, which is the first TOF in Mongolia. Sixteen participants joined the training and it was held until 20 December for 10 days. All participants have disabilities such as wheel chair users, visually impaired persons, hearing impaired persons, and intellectually impaired persons. Mr. Kenji Kuno, JICA Experts for this training, said "Persons with disability in Mongolia should take a leading role to promote social model of disability, otherwise, it is difficult for Mongolia to promote inclusive society."

As mentioned, DET facilitator is not teacher but facilitate discussion among participant. Through the discussion, participants are not only understanding disability but also think about how to promote social participation of PWDs. Therefore, sixteen participants of TOF learned how to promote discussion in DET.

At the clothing ceremony, the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, gave a certificate to all participant. They all are expected to work hard to promote DET as a first facilitator in Mongolia. And our project is willing to support DET facilitators to implement DET in Mongolia.
