Non-Accessible Environment Revealed in Ulaanbaatar City In collaboration with Government and NGOs sectors

From 15th November 2016 for 2 weeks, an accessibility audio was held in Ulaanbaatar city. This is the first collaborated audit between government and NGOs sectors, till then they conducted audit individually. Mongolian government is now trying to promote collaboration with NGOs since they enacted the Law on the Rights of PWDs on February 2016. Therefore, this is the first attempt for the government to conduct accessibility audit in collaboration with NGOs, especially disabled people organizations (DPOs).

In Ulaanbaatar city, environmental and information accessibility is very important issues. Sidewalks are bumpy, a car is first rather than people, slopes are so steep, and public transportation is not accessible. All need to be fixed.

We organized 3 audit teams; 1. Public Transportation Team, 2. Public Building & Facility team, 3. Information Accessibility Team. Each team has governmental officer and PWDs, and they supported each other. As a result, non-accessible environment was found at many places in Ulaanbaatar City. For example, too steep entrances of sidewalk, and too steep slopes, no Braille block around bus stops, and no information board, which all do not meet the national standard.

Based on this result, the project will make report to the government and ask counter action. At the same time, we will promote accessibility in collaboration with Mongolian government and NGOs.
