Monitored Schools Activities for building Inclusive Schools has begun!

One of the aims of START phase2 is promoting inclusive education in all schools in Mongolia. Therefore, the Project selected 25 monitored schools[1] from Ulaanbaatar to be model for other schools. Those monitored schools started their activities to promote inclusive education according to their own plans till May 2022.

Today, we would like to introduce one of the monitored school plans. It is planned by "Oyunii Undraa Complex School".

The school is located in Bayangol District, Ulaanbaatar. It was established in 1997 as to be a model school for other schools in the same district. There are more than 5,000 pupils belonging to the school in 1st to 12th grades.

The school has set the following three goals as an initiative for the inclusive school.

  1. Establish School Committee to identify the developmental characteristics and needs of students with disabilities, and create a school plan to provide those children with appropriate educational services.
  2. Improve the school environment based on the actual situation of child-development and build a positive learning environment.
  3. Evaluate individual developmental growth with IEP[2] and remove barriers to achieve better school life and learning.

To achieve the three goals, the school planned the following five activities. 1. Conducting regular meetings and training for teachers and staff, and analyzing actual situation of children with disabilities by School Committee, 2. Improving environment such as installing handrails, slopes, or relaxing spaces, 3. Managing class to include children who need Reasonable Accommodation[3], 4. Creating teaching materials for children who need Reasonable Accommodation, and 5. Learning evaluation by using IEP.

The Project will monitor the activities of 25 monitored schools with officers in charge of inclusive education. We hope that the activities of the 25 monitored schools will give rise to good examples of promoting inclusive education at regular schools throughout Mongolia!
