February 2017
The induction training of the "Module of Mathematics I" [1] was held from 6th to 8th February 2017.
The three selected IFPs (pilot IFPs) started a new school year in February 2017, and would use the "Module of Mathematics I" in their lesson. For the maximum utilization of the textbook, it is important not only that IFP teachers understand how to use it effectively, but also that school and governmental authorities understand the significance to use it. Therefore, the training targeted Mathematics teachers as well as directors of the pilot IFPs and technicians of three Provincial Directorates of Education and Human Development to which the pilot IFPs belong.
The training was held in one classroom of Matola IFP, one of the pilot IFPs. February is one of the hottest months in Mozambique, in which the temperature reaches mostly over 35 degrees Celsius. During the training, the air conditioner was broken, and inside the classroom became hotter than outside. Under such condition, the mathematics team introduced the structure and contents of "Module of Mathematics I" and conducted a simulated lesson from the Fraction chapter. Additionally, the assignment of lesson periods (i.e., how many lessons to be spent for each section of each chapter) was discussed and agreed upon by the participants. The discussion was heated, and the training was completed successfully.
According to the questionnaire conducted on the last day of the training, the textbook was highly appreciated. All the participants said that they wanted to use the textbook as soon as possible. From now on, the Project will monitor how the textbook is utilized in the pilot IFPs, and will prepare for its nationwide dissemination next year.
