Monitored lessons using the new textbook "Module of Mathematics I"
"Project for Expansion of New Curriculum of Teacher Training Institute (IFP) in Mozambique"

In March 2017, the project team visited the three pilot IFPs that started the lessons using the new textbook "Module of Mathematics I" (validation version) the month before. The objective was to know how the developed material was used in the lesson.

The monitoring team observed whether all the students had the textbook and how they used it. The team also asked teachers and students about their impression and suggestion of points that should be revised. Their opinions will be reflected on the final version of the textbook to be developed and distributed to all the IFPs.

The textbook was highly appreciated in the three IFPs. The following are examples of their comments:

  • "The explanation in the textbook is short, clear and easy to understand. I can provide more quality lessons by using the textbook compared with last year." (Matola IFP teacher)
  • "The small tests showed that students understood better than the last year students in general." (Chitima IFP teacher)
  • "I read the textbook when I have free time. As I prepare for the next lesson by reading the textbook, I understand the lesson contents very well." (Nampula IFP student)

On the other hand, the team found that some students had difficulties in solving exercise problems. It might be necessary to add more exercises, including basic ones, to allow students to learn the contents thoroughly.

Thus, the new textbook has already changed the IFP lessons. We are looking forward to seeing further impact of the new textbook on students' learning, interest and motivation.
