In 2014, the completion rate in primary education in Mozambique was 52.2% (MINEDH). In addition, MINEDH's research in 2013 found that only 6.3% of grade 3 students in primary school achieved the desired standard of basic reading and writing skills. Furthermore, the SACMEQ results from 2007 revealed a challenge that the level of student' learning in Mozambique remains lower than the other countries in the same region. Mozambique was 12th in literacy and was 10th in numeracy among 15 countries. Thus, the quality of education is still a big challenge in Mozambique. In order to tackle the issue, the Government of Mozambique has highlighted the importance of teachers' quality, and is working on the reform of pre-service teachers' education and training program.
It is within this context that JICA has been implementing "Strengthening of Primary Education in Gaza province in Mozambique", and "Improvement of teaching methodology of IFPs on In-service education and training in Mozambique" to carry out student-centered, problem-based learning, and hypothesis-testing methods for lessons. Based on the results produced by these projects and training, the Government of Mozambique requested further assistance from the Government of Japan to improve pre-service teacher training program in primary education.
This Project aims to improve the capacity to teach of IFP teachers and enhance subject knowledge and the capacity to teach of IFP students, namely future primary teachers, in the country, by developing learning materials of Mathematics and Natural Science education and distributing them to all IFPs. By transmitting skills and knowledge to National Institute Educational Development (INDE), it will contribute to improve the capacities of core people who are in charge of development of learning materials.
The main activities of the Project are as follows:
IFP students' capacity to teach Mathematics and Natural Science is developed.
Learning materials developed by the Project are applied to use in pre-service teachers' education and training program in IFP.
