Progress of Construction Works at the Cyclone-Affected Facilities
- Renovation work completed / Handover ceremony held for the facilities -

Renovation and construction works of public facilities to ensure its resilience at five sites in Sofala Province, Mozambique are on progress, which were damaged by the Cyclone Idai. This construction started in January 2021, and one of the sites, the Health Personnel Training School in Nhamatanda, was completed. The handover ceremony was held on 8 December 2021 and was attended by 12 people from Post Cyclone Reconstruction Cabinet (GREPOC), Sofala Provincial Health Service (SPSS), training school officials and JICA Mozambique office.

This site was not damaged severely by Cyclone Idai, but in January 2021, Cyclone Eloise hit and caused extensive damage, blow-off roof sheets and rain leakage. For this reason, four buildings are fully renovated of their roof structure, ceiling and electrical service. Other buildings are reinforced their roofs for future cyclone. In the reinforcement work, end purlins, fasteners on roof sheets and steel joints on the members are added to increase the strength.

Cyclones and strong winds give an upward force to blow the roof off. This upward force outside the building is stronger than inside.
The project aims to strengthen the roof by installing additional purlins (*1), metal joints: hurricane clips (*2) and metal joints: hurricane ties (*3).
