WG3's survey of groundwater contamination with excerment

A team of Working Group 3 (Microbiological water assessment) led by Dr. E. Haramoto (Uni. Of Yamanashi) and Dr. K. Sei (Kitasato Uni.) collected water samples of the sewerage systems and livestock farms in the valley and conducted microbial analysis on the samples.

It is supposed that groundwater has been contaminated with excrement of people and farm animals, however, effect on groundwater pollution by each pollutant has not been fully revealed. WG3 has worked to understand and visualize a state of groundwater pollution with excrement by detecting genes of microbes which are characteristically observed in fecal waste.

Besides, the team collected groundwater potentially contains ANAMMOX, a microbe removes Nitrogen in water, which is expected, if we can detect and obtain indigenous ANAMMOX, to be applied as a water treatment technology to LCD (Locally fitted, compact and distributed water treatment system).
