Survey on source and quality of groundwater (Working Group 2)

"Seven Working Group 2 members of Uni. of Yamanashi led by Dr. Takashi Nakamura and Dr. Kei Nishida conducted field survey in the Kathmandu Valley to identify the water quality and sources of groundwater, an important water resource in this area. In the first week, groundwater samples were collected from shallow and deep wells, and spring water samples were collected from Lele region in the south of Kathmandu valley at 1000-1700m altitude. The WG2 is also studying the health impact from locally used water by collaborating with WG3 and WG5. A member of WG2 stayed at a household in Kathmandu and collected information on current situation and awareness of water use at household level. In addition, the member joined a questionnaire survey on the residents' water uses conducted by The Small Earth Nepal and understood the water use at wider scale. The data obtained through this summer survey will be used to analyse the groundwater recharge and improve the estimation of water-borne infection risk.
