Terminal Evaluation

Having completion of the project in October 2019, the Terminal Evaluation was jointly conducted till 17 May 2019 by Japanese side and Nepalese side to examine achievement of the project's outputs etc.

The joint evaluation team member list and summary of evaluation result and recommendations are as follows.

Summary of evaluation result (Achievement of project purpose and outputs):

Project purpose Management system on potable water resources - shallow and deep groundwater, and surface and rain water - is enhanced. likely to be achieved by the end of the Project.
Output 1 Potable water resources situation, including water demand, consumption and supply in the Kathmandu Valley, is studied and future forecast is conducted. Achieved
Output 2 Situation and sources of groundwater pollution is studied. Achieved
Output 3 Microbiological situation of environmental water, such as groundwater, surface water, and rain water, in the Kathmandu Valley is studied. will be achieved by the end of the Project
Output 4 Appropriate locally-fitted, compact and distributed (LCD) water treatment system for groundwater and surface water in the Kathmandu Valley is developed. Achieved
Output 5 Social and economic evaluation of the LCD water treatment system installation in the Kathmandu Valley is studied. will be achieved by the end of the Project (evaluation of coping cost as an economic impact indicator of LCD system will be completed by the end of the project)
Output 6 A task force (TF) to enhance the social implementation is organized. will be achieved by the end of the Project (TF was established. Making an integrated water security map public is under consideration and it will be done by the end of the project)

Recommendations to the project:

For remaining project period (till the end of October 2019)

  • Clarifying how to utilize and update the water security maps and to operate and maintain the LCD water treatment system
  • Preparing an action plan towards after the completion of the Project
  • Clarifying actions to be taken for a community whom the hydrogen gas generators have been introduced. (to be responded by IOE)

After completion of the project

  • Implementing and monitoring the activities identified in the action plan
  • Sharing and reporting the progress to the MoWS and JICA

Responding to the evaluation result and recommendations made by the joint evaluation team, the project will discuss necessary actions such as making an action plan and clarification of sharing roles by each component.
