The Livestock sector in Pakistan is a backbone of Pakistan's economy, and it contributes about 60% of Agricultural GDP and about 12% of total GDP. Pakistan is one of the world prominent countries in terms of the livestock population and production of milk; there are about 43 million cattle (7th largest in the world), about 36.6 million buffaloes (2nd largest), about 70 million goats (4rd largest), and 29 million sheep (10th largest). The production of milk in Pakistan ranks 4th in the world with about 39.7 million tons of annual production.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, the target province of the Project, holds about 8 million of cattle and buffaloes which is almost double the total number of cattle owned in Japan.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, more than 80 % of the population derive their livelihood from agriculture and livestock farming. Particularly, as milk and meat are the main sources of food and income, Livestock farming is important for them.
The majority of the livestock farmers are categorized as small-scale livestock farmers who own 2-3 heads cattle or buffaloes. Livestock production is a source of cash income, an asset, and a valuable source of animal protein for rural workers, including farmers and women. However, the average production of milk in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province is low due to poor livestock nutrition, poor feeding conditions and inadequate reproductive management. The Livestock development through selection of appropriate technology, development of extension infrastructure for small-scale livestock farmers, and Improvement of productivity is expected to make a significant contribution to reducing economic and social inequalities, stabilizing and developing the region.
Livelihood of small-scale livestock farmers with dairy animals is improved in the target areas of Hazara Division.
The services to support increased production of fresh milk and dairy products by small-scale livestock farmers are improved in the target areas.
For Output 1:
1-1. | Collect and analyze information on small-scale farmers' dairy farm management and management techniques of dairy animals. |
1-2. | List-up candidates of appropriate techniques that are expected to be effective to increase milk production according to different environmental conditions. |
1-3. | Apply and examine the appropriate techniques on the pilot farms. |
1-4. | Evaluate the effectiveness of appropriate techniques on milk production and identify recommended techniques according to different environmental conditions. |
1-5. | Compile information (messages) on recommended techniques for extension to other farmers and prepare their teaching materials. |
For Output 2:
2-1. | Provide opportunities for livestock technical personnel at the respective districts to acquire knowledge and skills regarding the appropriate techniques. |
2-2. | Conduct training for the livestock technical personnel in charge of model villages on the extension methods. |
2-3. | Support the livestock technical personnel as facilitators in undertaking extension activities by encouraging surrounding farmers of the pilot farms to participate in the group activities. |
2-4. | Compile teaching materials on extension methods and activities (e.g. extension handbooks) for facilitators. |
2-5. | Conduct training on the extension methods of appropriate techniques for livestock technical personnel who have not participated in the activities in the model villages. |
For Output 3:
3-1. | Study the markets and distribution channels of fresh milk and dairy products sold by listed farmers and farmer groups. |
3-2. | Identify and analyze challenges that have been hindering increase of small-scale famers' income from selling fresh milk and dairy products. |
3-3. | Make plans on pilot projects to improve marketing and supply chains of fresh milk and dairy products sold by small-scale farmers. |
3-4. | Carry out the pilot projects at the model sites. |
3-5. | Based on the experiences and lessons acquired from the pilot projects, compile a plan for improvement of marketing and supply chains of fresh milk and dairy products to increase income of small-scale farmers. |
