Philippine Rice Research Institute
Rice is the most essential food in the Philippines, but there is a shortage of rice with increasing population.
To address the above issue, the development of rice variety and improvement of rice farming system have been required. In this circumstance, JICA had assisted Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) to be established in 1985 by virtue of Executive Order 1061 through Grant-in-aid (1989 - 1991). Since then, Technical Cooperation Projects started with TCP1 implemented in 1992 to 1997 to improve the research capability of PhilRice, and TCP2 in 1997 to 2002 to develop farming technology mainly for the small scale rice farmers.
As the results of TCP1 and TCP2, technologies on rice production in PhilRice have been remarkably improved. However, productivity in farm is still low at 3.56 t/ha in national average. PhilRice had been tasked to play a major role to resolve the issue. PhilRice further requested JICA for TCP3 to help develop and promote location-specific technology for rice and rice-based technology to be disseminated to farmers in different ecosystem and agronomic conditions.
Overall Goal: Productivity and income of farmers in the target areas are increased
Project Purpose: Rice productivity of participating farmers is improved
