Advanced Training in East New Britain Province

Advanced EQUITV In-service training was held from 15th March to 19th March in East New Britain Province. This is an advanced training for provincial trainers, who have already completed the basic training last year. (For more information about the EQUITV training structure, please check ‘Monthly Activities September 2012’ in Project News.)

What are the differences between basic and advanced training?

-Basic Training-

  • Target: Teachers who never utilize EQUITV program
  • Contents: The training covers various areas of EQUITV program such as
    • How to install TV or other equipment
    • What is EQUITV?
    • EQUITV awareness activities

-Advanced Training-

  • Target: Teachers who utilize EQUITV program
Contents: The training aims at improving teacher's teaching skill such as facilitation skill, preparation of teaching materials, enhancing student's participation in the class, and learning evaluation, through more effective utilization of the EQUITV program.

In short, compared to the basic training, the advanced training focuses on how to improve quality of teaching by utilizing the EQUITV program in the class.

The advanced training started with a review of basic training and then participants learned about effective ways of using the EQUITV program at their own school through group activities. For example, in ‘Important point of facilitating TV lesson' module, they discussed about what a conducive classroom environment for TV lesson would be and made rules for equipment management. In the session about ‘Facilitating skill in classroom', they learned some useful teaching skills such as ‘Ice break method' to get attention from students and to raise their participation.

The training was not only composed of lecture and discussion but also the participants had practice lessons. For instance, some groups gave math lesson to other participants using handmade paper rulers to explain a fraction. Other groups gave science experiment about acid and alkaline using lemons, hibiscus flowers, salt, egg, and other goods which can be obtained easily in their schools.

The questionnaire results of this advanced training showed high participants' satisfaction. In fact, 97 % of the total participants answered that the training was ‘Very effective' while the remaining 3% answered ‘Effective'. Also, there were many positive comments such as ‘I learned how to utilize EQUITV effectively; it helps me when I facilitate the class' or ‘I got enough knowledge from the training to conduct cluster training in my district’. The participants will conduct cluster training as provincial trainers in their district for teachers and school managements. EQUITV expects the provincial trainers will be active in their districts.
