Kick-off workshop for project

On 6th December 2017, the inception workshop for the project was held in Port Moresby. Here we introduce the content of the workshop.

The purpose of the workshop was to inform representatives of organizations relevant to the preparation of greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories in Papua New Guinea about the official launch of the project. The GHG inventory covers GHG emission sources and sinks of from a wide range of sectors, including energy, agriculture, forestry, and waste. Therefore, it is necessary to collect a variety of statistical data in these sectors. In order to facilitate the data collection under the project, it is essential to have the agencies responsible for each data understand the purpose and importance of the project and to ask their cooperation for data collection.

At the workshop, the Climate Change Development Authority (CCDA), counterparts of the Project, presented an overview of Papua New Guinea's climate change policies, and the preparation status and institutional arrangements for preparation of Papua New Guinea's GHG inventory. JICA short-term experts also participated in the workshop and gave presentations on the international rules for GHG inventories, the overview of the project, and the evolution of the institutional arrangements for GHG inventory preparation in Japan. After these presentations, participants discussed issues and lessons learned in collecting statistical data related to GHG inventories.

More than 30 people from PNG Power, Department of Agriculture and Livestock, PNG Forest Authority, PNG customs and other government agencies participated in the event and lively discussions were held.
