Rehabilitation of Konta Peripheral Health Unit (PHU)

Konta is one of the most remote villages in Kambia district.  After the war in 2002, the PHU was renovated but was again damaged by heavy storm in June 2007. Since then, the PHU had been running in a private house. There were several activities to be supported by JICA. With this background, the DHMT prioritized three main activities from among the list and the rehabilitation of Konta PHU was selected as one of the prioritized activities to be funded by JICA. Through discussions at several meetings held with the DHMT and the community, the people of Konta identified their own contributions towards the rehabilitation process.  A study tour was then held at Kamagbewu for the people of Konta to learn from their experiences. The Kamagbewu PHU was rehabilitated with the support of JICA in 2008 with the full participation of the community. In December 2009, the DHMT and JICA started the rehabilitation with total cooperation from the community. The community provided local construction materials including labour and also feeding and accommodation for the contractors. Rehabilitation was completed in March 2010 and the handing over ceremony was held on the 19th April 2010. The refurbished Konta PHU now has cooling facility for vaccines, an incinerator, water well, latrine and a motorbike provided by JICA.
