Meeting with working group members

On 8th May 2017, the project team had a meeting with the working group members to share the progress of the project activities in Limpopo and to discuss the future plan.

The working group consists of 40 members who are officials of national, provincial and district Department of Social Development (DSD), officials of related departments such as Department of Education, Department of Health, Department of Agriculture and the Office of Premier, focal person from municipality, South African Police Services (SAPS) and, representatives from Disabled People's Organizations (DPOs) and persons with disabilities from community. In addition, Ms Fungheni, a councillor of Lim 345 municipality where the project site locates joined as the working group member.

In the meeting, the challenges the project team faced were shared and discussed. For example, the project team visited a village and met a young lady with hearing impairment. She has never been to both mainstream and special school so that she cannot read, write and use sign language. Only she can communicate with her family members by body language. Thus, the Project could not invite her to the project activity due to the communication barrier. In response to this challenge, DeafSA, organisation of Deaf persons promised to visit her village and explore what kinds of supports she needs and DeafSA can provide.

In the meeting, the working group members also agreed to consolidate each activity plan of the programmes which the organisations of the working group members are implementing to create synergistic effects.
