Community awareness activity was conducted in Mashobye village!

Persons with disabilities, officials of Department of Social Development, municipal councilor, etc. visited Mashobye village for community awareness. This advocacy activity is based on the action plan developed in January 2018 which aims to expand Self-Help Group (SHG) of persons with disabilities and peer counselling in Collins Chabane municipality. Around 50 people including a ward councilor, a member of disability forum, persons with disabilities, etc. who are living in the village participated in the activity.

In the advocacy activity, leaders with disabilities, especially female leaders with disabilities explained Self-Help Group (SHG) of persons with disabilities and peer counseling. Participants showed their interests by asking questions on the difference between SHG and protective workshop, how to include Deaf people in peer counselling, etc.

By utilising hand-made training materials and dialogue-based facilitation skills, leaders with disabilities delivered messages that disability is in society, we should not change persons with disabilities but change society and voices of persons with disabilities must be heard and reflected to change society.

After the advocacy activity, people in Mashobye village wish to establish SHG of persons with disabilities and conduct peer counselling in the village, and the project will continuously monitor and follow up the action plan and activities on empowerment of persons with disabilities.
