Background

The Sudanese government has set "the Executive Programme for the Agricultural Revival" in April 2008 as a national agricultural strategy to guarantee food security and the promotion of exports of agricultural products as a method of poverty reduction. It also guards against the risk of disintegration of the whole economy due to excessive oil dependency. There are many tasks to achieve the goals of the programme, especially key tasks to reinforce the administrative capability of governmental agencies and the implementation potential of the development plan. The project aims to strengthen human and organizational capacities of the Ministry of Agriculture and relevant organizations to actualize "The Executive Programme for the Agricultural Revival" for Sudan.

Project Summary

There are 2 main pillars in the project. The first one is for development of Human Resource and Organizational Capacity Development. The activities are mainly conducted in the Federal Ministry. The second pillar is for Promotion of Upland Rice Production. It is implemented in 6 states (Gezira, Gedaref, Sennar, White Nile, River Nile and Northern State).

Overall Goal

The quality of public services provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and the organizations concerned are improved through their capacity development.

Project Highlights

Training of trainers is designed to build capacities of extensionists to be the trainers on upland rice cultivation. They gain practical knowledge and skills in seed quality, land preparation, sowing, weed control, fertilizer application, irrigation, pest and disease control, harvesting and post-harvesting through field activities and workshops by JICA rice cultivation experts. Demonstration farm activities are conducted to encourage local farmers to improve their livelihood through growing rice.
