Development of Curriculum for the popular sewing course in KVTC

On 13th and 14th November, 2013, Capacity Development Project for Provision of the Services for Basic Human Needs in Kassala (K-TOP) Vocational Training Cluster has conducted Curriculum Development Workshop on women sewing course. Kassala Vocational Training Center (KVTC), which K-TOP supports, offers short-term courses for meeting various kinds of needs, besides the three years apprenticeship diploma course. Among those short-term courses, there are several courses being planned and conducted through year. They are computer course and women course. Especially, sewing course is the main training for targeting women. Last year, 20 women, which are the fixed numbers of the sewing course, participated in the training.

Regarding the sewing course, Ms. Salam Alkhatib, visiting lecturer, conducts the training with her assistant. Her training is very popular and she is teaching the course not only in KVTC but also in the other vocational training institutions. However, since all contents of the training and their order are only inside the Ms. Salam memory, except her, nobody knows what to teach, in what extent and in which order. If this goes on, nobody can take over Ms. Salam's course. Therefore, K-TOP vocational training cluster decided to develop a curriculum with the women section instructors using CUDBAS (Curriculum Development Based on Ability Structure) method and having advice from Ms. Salam.

Development of the curriculum using CUDBAS proceeds as follows: 1) First of all, making a training course plan including the objective, target, and the length of the training period. 2) Based on the clarified plan, participants breaks down skill, knowledge and expected attitude on 30 cards. Then, divide written cards are in groups based on the proceeding of the job, and sort them according to the importance. What is completed in these steps is called CUDBAS chart. 3) In the end, the curriculum will be completed by formulating subjects and making the training schedule.

When the curriculum for sewing has developed, the person who became most excited was Ms. Salam. "Because of this new curriculum, I can tell clearly to the other organization what kind of training I can offer. I'm really happy about this." From now on, with the instruction from Ms. Salam, the instructor who can teach sewing training will be newly trained.
