Vol.5: "HOMBOSAMA" – harnessing the youth of Homboza Village

This issue focuses on a community - based organization called "HOMBOSAMA," who were the trainers of the Community Facilitator training in Kondoa District, featured in the previous issue (LINK). The official name of the group is: "Homboza Sanaa kwa Maendeleo," which means "Homboza Art for Development" in English. It is a group specialized in drama facilitation based in Homboza Village, Kisaware District, Pwani Region.

Background

HOMBOSAMA was an informal youth group called "Homboza Youth Group" which existed in Homboza Village, one of the pilot villages of the previous phase of the project. This youth group derived from the development programme implemented in Kisarawe District called "Kisarawe Youth Development Network" (KIYODEN). Even after the end of the programme, some young people of the village continued to gather and carry out activities. With an aim to encourage such spontaneous activities by the youth and utilize their activeness into development issues, the project trained them to become the trainers of the Community Facilitator training during the previous phase. In May and August 2014, the group conducted training programmes in 9 pilot villages of the project. In July that year, with some assistance from the project, the group succeeded to become an officially registered community based organization.

Activities in the Village

Majority of the group members are local technicians such as carpenters and plumbers. They actively conduct drama facilitation activities on top of their day jobs. For example, in November 2014, they created their own drama on the topic of "health," which was regarded as the No. 1 problem in the village, and performed at the village assembly. They also conducted drama facilitation on the topic of "child rights" in 5 neighbouring villages, responding to the request from an international NGO working in the area. They are gradually expanding their field of activities.

In addition, some members are also the Community Facilitators of their own sub-villages.

Community Facilitator training in Kondoa District

Responding to the request from the project, HOMBOSAMA conducted training in Kondoa District from June to July this year. This became the second opportunity for them to carry out Community Facilitator training for improved O&OD on contract base. With the objective of emphasizing the importance of "problem finding" through dialogue with the villagers within the process of script building, the contents and the timetable of the training were dramatically reformed.

HOMBOSAMA has notably developed their skills as trainers through collaborating with the project. We look forward to seeing further growth of the group.
