The Project conducted a study visit to Japan for 14 staff of National Health Security Office of Thailand as part of Knowledge Co-creation Program to plan and establish a people centered health information system from March 4 – 17, 2018.

As the population of Thailand is rapidly aging, one of the challenges is to maintain the provision of quality health services and continuum of care for elderly citizens. The Project encourages the use of ICT as an important tool to help solve such challenges. Thailand has accumulated massive health information data to be used for medical professionals and general population. On the other hand, Japan has started using ICT in health and welfare sectors in response to rapidly aging society. One of the examples is ongoing development of an information platform called PeoPLe which merges basic health data of Japanese citizens. Under the platform, medical professionals will be able to use health data of patients for effective treatment and general population will be able to access to their own health data.

This study visit aims to learn innovative approaches using ICT in health and welfare sectors in Japan and develop for a people-centered health information system as a role model of a next-generation UHC in Thailand.

Thanks to kind cooperation from organizations including the Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare, Global Health Policy Research (iGHP), National Center for Global Health and Medicine (NCGM), Tokyo University and others, experiences and lessons learned on Japan's health ICT policies and practices have been widely shared and enthusiastically discussed. The Project continues to provide technical assistance in order to establish a people centered health information system in Thailand.
