Mr.Paeniu (Left) is a staff member of the Tuvalu government's department of Fisheries. He is in command of the foram ecology for the project. His training will be held at the University of Tokyo, University of Ryukyu and Oceanic Planing Co.Ltd., which has the facility of the foram culture of Universty of Tokyo. He will learn ecology and morphology of the foram, population structure analysis of the foram, aquaculture of foram, and so on. He will have a chance to research the Japanese foram at Ishigaki island as well.

Mr.Ane(Right) is a staff member of the department of Land & Survey. He is responsible for sand transport and sedimentation for our project. He will train at Ibaraki University, National institute for environmental studies and National Institute for land and infrastructure Management. He will have chances to survey the Japanese coast line at Ibaraki and Ishigaki island. He is to learn coastal survey analyzing, RTK(Real Time Kinetic)survey, its analyzing application with GIS.

I took this picture at the Tuvalu international Airport when they departed. The necklace made of shells and tree fruits is a lucky charm for tourists in Tuvalu. They have to transfer at Suva for Nadi in Fiji and Inchon in South Korea before arriving in Japan. Since this is their first trip to Japan, they are worried about arriving in Japan safely, nervous even more than their actual training. Looking at their worrying, even I got antsy!

This training is very important because they are expected to continue their activities for their countries even after our project term ends. However, more than anything else, I hope they get a good impression of Japan and come back smiling.

Wording responsible: Fumiko Matsudate (project coordinator)
