Zambia Ministry of Health officials visited Thailand to learn the potential role of health technology assessment in the quest for universal health coverage

In July 2017, six officials from Zambia Ministry of Health (MoH)[1] travelled to Thailand for a study visit to learn the health technology assessment (HTA) approach to inform health policy. The Project for Strengthening Basic Health Care Services Management for Universal Health Coverage (BHC for UHC Project)[2] is supporting the Zambia MoH in the revision process of the National Health Care Package (NHCP), for which it aims to apply the concept of HTA for efficient health services provision. The tour was supported by the BHC for UHC Project, Zambia, in conjunction with the GLO+UHC Project[3], Thailand, which was further accompanied by delegates from the International Decision Support Initiative (iDSI)[4] and its key partner PRICELES SA[5] from South Africa. The Health Intervention and Technology Assessment Program (HITAP)[6] hosted the program and shared the Thai experience in achieving universal health coverage (UHC) and the role HTA has played in different aspects of UHC implementation. Please refer to the blog post from iDSI[7] for more details of the study tour.
